Kale chips are an incredibly healthy snack and a nutritional rockstar. And they’re delicious, too!
I always love to find new, healthy snack options to make things more exciting and change things up a bit. There’s a restaurant in my neighborhood that has the most AMAZING kale chips, so I knew I had to try and recreate my own. However, they use a dehydrator, which I don’t have, so instead, I baked them! The consistency ended up being a tad different because of the different cooking methods, but still so yummy. Spicy Kale chips are one of my new favorite snacks!
For some reason, I’ve been on a spicy kick so I decided to make these extra spicy!! However, you definitely don’t need to season these kale chips the way I do. You can choose to add whatever flavors you want! Just follow the same baking method and change the seasonings.
Also, apparently I have absolutely no ability to determine spiciness levels. For example, there are some things that I think are super spicy and everyone else disagrees with me. And then other times I think things aren’t that spicy and everyone else says it is! Haha it truly makes so sense.
So, according to everyone else (who I would trust more than myself), these kale chips are SPICY!! But if you don’t like spicy, no problem! Just decrease the amount of cayenne pepper and paprika, or just change the spices entirely to fit what you’re looking for.
And if you’re looking for other healthy snack ideas, I love these no-bake, vegan 5 Ingredient Energy Snack Balls. Not spicy, but gooey and a little sweet.
Ingredients for Spicy Kale Chips:
- Kale – I used Dino Kale
- Avocado oil
- Spices: sea salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and nutritional yeast
Super simple ingredients and incredibly healthy!
Regarding nutritional yeast, this is a great, healthy option because it is one of the few nutritional yeast products that are non-fortified.
What does that mean? Basically, there are no added synthetic vitamins, as many of the nutritional yeasts sold at grocery stores include synthetic B12 and folate. Many believe that synthetic vitamins can be harmful to our health so I personally try to stick to natural sources of vitamins. But feel free to choose whatever option works best for you!
How to Make Spicy Kale Chips:
Kale chips are very easy to make. Start by preheating your oven, washing your bunch of kale, and then drying it completely. Then rip the leaves off the stems into bite-size pieces, like the size of chips, and place them into a large bowl. Note that they will shrink when they bake!
Now also add the avocado oil and seasonings to the bowl and mix very thoroughly. You want to make sure all of the spices are covering each kale chip equally (or else you might get an incredibly spicy bite, and then a bite with no seasoning!).
Spread the kale on two separate baking sheets. You want to make sure each kale piece has some space and is NOT on top of one another, or else they won’t get crispy. Using two baking sheets helps to spread them out well and avoid this problem!
Bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes. I baked mine for about 13 minutes. You just need to use your own judgment here since you want them to be fully cooked and crispy, but not burnt.
Take them out of the oven and let them cool. They will continue to get a little bit crispier as they cool down. Enjoy!
